The Nailoli Guide to Nail Prep: What to Do Before Every Set

To prep your nails for press-ons, wash and fully dry your hands, push back your cuticles, lightly buff the shine off each nail, and wipe every nail with an alcohol pad right before you apply. These four steps take about three minutes and do more for wear time than anything else.

Why prep matters

Press-on adhesive grips the surface of your natural nail. Oil, moisture, and the natural shine on the nail all get in the way of that grip. Prep removes all three, which is why a prepped set tends to hold better than one pressed onto bare, untouched nails.

What you need

Every Nailoli set includes what the four steps call for: a cuticle pusher, a buffing block, and an alcohol pad, along with nail glue, adhesive tabs, a nail file, and a case.

1. Wash and dry completely

Adhesive can't bond to oil or moisture. Wash with soap, not just water, and let your hands dry fully before you touch a single nail. Skip hand lotion and cuticle oil until the set is on, since both leave a film on the nail.

2. Push back your cuticles

Use the cuticle pusher in your kit to gently push your cuticles back so the whole nail plate is exposed. There's no need to cut them. Over-trimming invites irritation.

3. Buff lightly

A few light passes with the buffing block remove the natural shine so the adhesive has something to grip. Stop once the shine is gone. Buffing too hard thins the nail and can make it sensitive.

4. Wipe with alcohol last

Right before you apply, wipe each nail with the alcohol pad from your kit. It removes the last traces of oil. This is the step people skip most often, and skipping it causes more early lifting than anything else.

Quick tip: Apply right after the alcohol wipe. Touching your hair or face in between puts oil back on your nails.

Prep mistakes that cause lifting

Most early lifting traces back to the same few things: skipping the alcohol wipe, applying over lotion or oil, buffing so little that the shine stays, or letting the nails sit for a while after prepping. If a nail lifts in the first day, check these before blaming the set.

Lay out your set first

If your set has several sizes, as Essentials sets do with 24 nails in mixed sizes, match each nail to a finger before you start. Do it after you've prepped, so your hands stay clean while you choose. Once you've matched each nail, you're ready for glue or tabs. Not sure which to use?
