How to Make Your Press-On Manicure Last Longer

With good prep, the right size, and glue, a Nailoli set usually lasts one to two weeks. When a set lifts in the first few days, it's almost always one of three things: oil on the natural nail, a nail that's slightly too wide, or soaking your hands too soon after applying.

Start with clean, dry, buffed nails

Oil and lotion on your natural nail are the most common reason adhesive fails early. Wash your hands with soap and dry them completely. Push back your cuticles with the cuticle pusher, then lightly buff the shine off each nail with the buffing block. Finish with the alcohol pad on every nail right before you apply. If you wipe early and then touch your face or hair, you've put oil back on.

Get the size right before you order

A nail that's slightly too wide catches on things and lifts at the sides. Measure each nail with our Nail Sizing Guide before you order, and choose the size that matches. Every Nailoli nail arrives fully shaped and finished. Filing one down to fit will affect the finish, so it's worth getting the size right from the start.

With an Essentials set, you'll pick from 24 nails in mixed sizes. Lay them out thumb to pinky before you apply anything. If one nail doesn't sit right, try the one meant for the finger next to it.

Use glue for the longest wear

Every kit includes both glue and adhesive tabs. Glue gives the stronger bond and is the one to use if you want the full one to two weeks. Tabs are faster and easier to remove, which makes them a good fit for a weekend or a single event. For a closer comparison, read Nail Glue vs. Adhesive Tabs.

Protect the bond

The bond keeps setting for about an hour after you apply. Skip dishes, showers, and anything else that soaks your hands during that time. After that, wear gloves for dishes and heavy cleaning. Long soaks in hot water are the fastest way to lift an edge. Keep cuticle oil on the skin around your nails, not under the press-on, since oil under the nail weakens the bond over time.

Fix a lifted edge right away

If one edge starts to lift, don't wait for it to catch. Add a small dot of glue under the lifted spot and press it down for a few seconds.

Take them off gently

When you're ready for a new set, soak your fingertips in warm, soapy water for 10 to 15 minutes, or work cuticle oil around the edges to soften the adhesive. Then gently wiggle each nail from the base. If it doesn't lift easily, soak longer. Our removal guide covers the full process.
