Are Press-On Nails Bad for Your Natural Nails? What Actually Happens
Share
Press-on nails aren't bad for your natural nails when you apply and remove them correctly. Most damage comes from forced removal: peeling or prying a nail off before the adhesive has released, which pulls away the top layers of your natural nail. A light buff before you apply and a proper soak before you remove keep press-ons gentle on your nails.
Where does the damage come from?
Almost every story about press-ons ruining natural nails traces back to removal. When you pull off a nail that's still bonded, the adhesive takes part of your nail plate with it. The same thing happens when people peel off gel polish. The problem is rushed removal, not the product.

Before you apply, buff lightly. A few passes with the buffing block remove the shine so the adhesive can grip. Heavy buffing thins the nail, so stop once the shine is gone.
When it's time to take them off, soak your fingertips in warm, soapy water for 10 to 15 minutes, or work cuticle oil around the edges to soften the adhesive. Then gently wiggle each nail from the base. If it doesn't lift with light pressure, soak longer. Finish with cuticle oil to put moisture back into your nails.
What if I have sensitive skin?
If you've reacted to nail glue or other adhesives before, start with adhesive tabs. They sit on the nail itself, so there's no liquid glue that can run onto your skin. If you do use glue, keep it on the nail and wipe away any excess right away. If the skin around your nails gets red, itchy, or swollen, soak the set off and check with your doctor or a dermatologist before you try again.
Are press-ons gentler than acrylic or gel?
They can be. Press-ons don't require heavy filing of your natural nail, the way acrylic fills often do, or curing under a UV or LED lamp, the way gel does. As long as removal is gentle every time, press-ons are an easy way to give your nails a break between other manicures.
